Onondaga County and its largest union have reached an impasse in contract negotiations after more than a year of meetings on the subject. Talks broke down Thursday during the twelfth session of talks between the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) Local 834 and the county.
President Kathy Zabinski says considering the way the talks have gone so far, the county worker isn't being valued. She says the union members aren’t asking for too much:
Governor Andrew Cuomo joined local officials Wednesday in Solvay to unveil details of a plan to revitalize the western side of Onondaga Lake.
The $100 million project will include a 75-hundred seat lakefront concert pavilion across from the state fairgrounds. Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says it fits into the larger picture of the lake’s rebirth.
The announcement of the project is part of Governor Cuomo's proposed budget, and comes after a plan to build a sports stadium in Downtown Syracuse fell through due to concerns from Mayor Stephanie Miner.
The Syracuse area posts an improvement of a full 2% in the latest unemployment numbers released by New York State. The December jobless rate released Tuesday by the State Labor Department dropped to 6.5%, the lowest in more than 6 years. That compares to 8.5% in December of 2012.
John Balloni confirmed Monday what many already suspected…that he’s running for Onondaga County Sheriff. He’s been raising money for months, and retiring Sheriff Kevin Walsh has publicly supported Balloni as his successor. He told a crowd of about 50 supporters yesterday that in an age of tight budgets and sparse manpower, he wants more partnerships with local police agencies to boost community policing. But he stopped short of a full endorsement of consolidation.
