Syracuse Prepares for Start of NCAA Tournament

The Syracuse men's lacrosse team takes on Northeast Conference champion Bryant in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in the Carrier Dome. WAER's coverage starts at 7 PM with Countdown to Face-off. The game follows at 7:30. After winning the Big East Tournament Championship last weekend for the second straight season, the Orange was rewarded for with the top seed in this year's 16-team field.

Oliver Wang is a music writer, scholar, and DJ based in California. Since 1994, he's written on popular music, culture, race, and America for outlets such as NPR, Vibe, Wax Poetics, Scratch, The Village Voice, SF Bay Guardian, and LA Weekly.

Students at WAER are treated like professionals and perform meaningful work that leads to many rewards.  Students in the WAER News and Sports departments have been judged alongside other area professionals during the Syracuse Press Club Awards and other radio broadcast industry competitions.

Be a part of the news team

This is no watch-from-the-sidelines internship.  There are as many as 50 students working in the WAER newsroom each semester covering stories and issues important to Central New York.  Students cover press conferences and interview politicians, experts, and other news makers.  As members of the news department, you will develop your interviewing, writing, and reporting skills.

Tension Between Pandora and Artists

Despite 27,900 plays in the third quarter, recording artist Blake Morgan says he earned $1.62 from the popular internet music site Pandora.
In the third quarter of last year, Blake Morgan's songs were played on Pandora some 27,900 times. But the New York-based recording artist and label owner said he made only $1.62 from the popular Internet radio service.

Musical interests led Bill Rice into radio during the early 80s. While in college at the University of New Haven he spent most of his time at the student run station, acting as Station Manager, Jazz Director and Jazz Jock, Bottle Washer and Hall Monitor. Perplexed at being finally ejected - after all, he had graduated, they told him - Bill moved to Baltimore, where he landed his first real radio job at a little AM outfit. Best Local Newscast, Best Sports Show, Best Human Interest Feature Story were just some of the awards WAER's news and sports staff members were honored with Saturday Night at the Syracuse Press Club's annual awards banquet.  The yearly awards honor the best in broadcast, print and online journalism over a broad area in Central New York.
