Ben Fontana

Sports Director

I've loved sports for as long as I can remember. Ever since starting out playing flag football as a young boy and losing my first tooth on the gridiron, I knew sports would be a passion. Sitting on the couch as a young boy watching Monday Night Football is when I knew broadcasting would become a passion. Listening to the greats like Pat Summerall, Al Michaels, and Bob Costas made me realize this was a dream that could come true.  My first taste of the industry came from doing the Public Address for local Little League games in my community in upstate New York (Rotterdam, NY). The following summer in high school I attended a sports broadcasting camp in New Jersey headed by WAER alum Ian Eagle, and it became clear sports on radio was the path for me. After realizing once more broadcasting was becoming a passion, I decided to apply to the prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. After being accepted there, I knew it was the place for me. I immediately decided to join WAER where the greats like Marv Albert and Mike Tirico came before me, and I've been lucky enough to cover some great Orange teams. Now as the Sports Director here at 88.3 FM, I hope to lead our young staff to great broadcasting strides as SU heads into the 2013-2014 season in the ACC!

Syracuse, NY - Syracuse (0-2) welcomes Wagner (1-1) to the Carrier Dome Saturday. The orange is still searching for its first win of the season and of the Scott Shafer era.

The big talking point in coming into this game centers around Quarterback Drew Allen. The senior threw four interceptions last week against Northwestern and has come under a lot of scrutiny in the last week, but Quarterbacks coach, Tim Lester maintained all week in practice that Allen is still the starter.

Evanston, Ill. - #19 Northwestern (2-0) crushed Syracuse (0-2) 48-27 at Ryan Field Saturday. The Orange has dropped both games this season to two Big Ten teams, Penn State and Northwestern. The Scott Shafer era has not gotten off to a great start and the first year head coach is taking full responsibility.

“We didn't play well in this game, and it starts with me.” Shafer said following the loss. “I have to fix these mistakes for next week,” the Coach continued.

Evanston, Ill. - Everybody remembers last season’s heartbreaking loss in the Carrier Dome to Northwestern to start the year. The orange stormed back from 22-point deficit to take the lead with just over two minutes to go in the game and ultimately lost on a Northwestern final drive making the score 42-41 Wildcats.
