29th Annual Remembrance Week at Syracuse University

Allegra Craver / WAER News

The 29th annual "Remembrance Week" is taking place on the Syracuse University campus. This is a time to remember the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 where 35 Syracuse University students lost their lives.  After their tragic passing, S.U. created 35 scholarships for seniors.  Senior Alex Alvarez-Claudio was selected to represent Alexia Tsairis.  He feels a bond with Alexia and her talents as a photographer.

“I went to the archives and saw the negatives of her pictures and beautiful pictures of her trips in Europe with her family. I was connected to the way she moved forward every single day. Being a scholar is honoring that part of her by doing similar stuff and by being a person who engages in the community and helps.”

The entire week will feature various events around campus with new displays near the “Wall of Remembrance” in front of the Hall of Languages.

Alvarez-Claudio adds the events are accessible to the students as well as the public.  This year’s theme is “Look Back, Act Forward.”

“People who have been here for years, notice (the) different things and that the people that are new to the school can see what it is about and can ask questions about it.  And when they want to ask questions, we have their answers in all of our events.”

A panel discussion tonight with Newhouse School Professors will be discussing the media and terrorism. Alvarez-Claudio helped to organize the presentation.

“We were trying to create a panel that connected the event of 1988, the Pan AM Flight 103 tragedy, as well as what’s happening today.  There’s a lot of talk about fake news, about media, how media is handling a lot of things.  So, we thought that we could build that connection and talk about the media and the way that it portrays terrorism.”

The panel on Media and Terrorism will take place tonight at 7 P.M. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium located in Newhouse 3.  For a list of events click here.  To learn about the students who died on Pan Am Flight 103, click here
