Big Changes, Investments in NYC-area Airports and Upstate Technology Facility

Flying in and out of the New York City might look a lot different in the next few years.  Vice President Joe Biden was here in New York Monday with Governor Cuomo to announce a complete rebuilding of LaGuardia Airport. An advisory committee set up by Cuomo couldn’t come up with a way to renovate it…so they recommended starting from scratch.

“It comes up with more flight operating space, which is key for LaGuardia because that is what’s been causing a lot of the delays.  It has a world-class retail and hotel space, state-of-the art, post 9-11 security protocols.  The new airport eliminates the isolated terminals, builds one unified terminal.”

One change would move the terminal closer to the highway creating two miles more for taxi-ways, which in turn will help reduce the flight delays that plague travelers.  Vice President Biden has an infamous connection to the airport, having made disparaging remarks about its condition last year.  But he pointed out how important it is to the region.

“LaGuardia contributes 16 Billion in economic activity toe the city, generating 120,000 total jobs, 5.9 billion dollars in payroll.  This new investment is expected to generate an additional 8000 direct jobs, and 18,000 total jobs in the region, good jobs, jobs you can raise a family on.”

Biden and Cuomo emphasized this is not a proposal, but a plan that’s already been put out to bid.

The two also announced planned upgrades to J-F-K Airport, as well as an expansion of Stewart Airport, north of the city, primarily to handle more cargo flights.

BIDEN, CUOMO MAKE ROCHESTER ECONOMIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Vice President Joe Biden was in Rochester Monday, announcing a major investment in the region. The Federal Government government is putting millions of dollars toward photonics research.  Biden was joined by Governor Cuomo in announcing the center, expected to create thousands of jobs, capitalizing on the area’s past of innovation in optics from the now diminished Kodak empire.

The American Institute for manufacturing Integrated Photonics will be a joint venture of Rochester institute of Technology, MIT and other colleges.  The center was awarded to Rochester over bids from California and Florida
