Comedian Bill Maher To Perform at the Landmark Theater on Saturday

If you like your politics with a dose of humor, you might like a performance coming to Syracuse.  Political satirist Bill Maherperforms Saturday night at the Landmark Theater.

People don’t always like to talk about politics.  But this weekend in Syracuse, you’ll have the chance to laugh about them.  Bill Maher is bringing his stand-up act to the Landmark Theater Saturday.  Like his shows “Politically Correct” and the current “Real Time” on HBO, his stand-up act is very topical.

Maher is a bit of an historian, too.  He says partisanship in Congress goes back to the days of George Washington.

“I just don’t know whether it stopped legislation like it does now. We seem to be at a complete impasse. I mean, Congress needs a colonic so badly. And that’s very bad for the country. I know the Republicans say we actually have too many laws.  Well, I’d like to find out if the people, who are always championing the anti-regulation, do they understand that regulations mean rules that protect you and stop you from getting poisoned and things like that?”

He says satire is also an old art, which allows people to hear some truths about the issues of the day and maybe even learn something.  In fact, he believes his audiences come to have some of the points of view ‘rub off.’  He does wonder about the T.V. crowd, though.

“Sometime I leave that studio and think, wow, those people knew two things. Obama’s perfect and Sarah Palin is stupid. You know, they seem to only know to cheer for the blue team and boo for the red team, which is not really great for democracy. But the stand-up audience, they’re the best. They always know everything that’s going on and they’re not sensitive. You know, the stand-up audience always has the attitude of ‘go on man, go to the edge’. That’s where we want you to go. And that’s where I do go.”

Maher will be performing at the Landmark Theater on Saturday.  The show begins at 8 p.m.
