Students at Delaware Elementary School in Syracuse probably made some healthier choices than some adults today on this National Food Day. The students have been learning about fresh fruits and vegetables all week.
At lunchtime today they were treated to a farmer’s market in the cafeteria. Jose’ Monserrate and Janaya Brown were introduced to new dishes and flavors to crave.
"The ratatouille I’d never tasted. A lot of vegetables like onions, tomatoes, peppers – and all kinds of vegetable - mushrooms," Monserrate said.
"I liked the ratatouille and the kind of bread with the hot sauce and ranch," Brown said.
Deleware Principal Kara Shore says the cafeteria always has a selection of fruits and veggies. However, today they selected from a cornucopia of choices.
"They all got to take home a bag with them. And in that bag are a couple of potatoes that the students have. And they were also give some fresh fruits today, which was not part of the ratatouille, but that is also part of our food week. They got to take some grapes and some apples."
Janaya adds she plans to eat more apples and oranges. Students also learned about how to recycle food waste and containers and were given healthy recipes to bring home to share with their families.
