Five Ton Military Cargo Vehicle Gets New Purpose Helping Veterans

A truck once used to transport supplies to combat areas will now deliver food and goodwill to veterans across Central New York.

A staffing agency is teaming up with local veterans organizations to supply food, furniture, and clothing to veterans. And they’re hand delivering these supplies in a five ton military cargo vehicle.

Owner of Express Employment Professionals John Calabrese says the truck isn’t only a handy storage area.  It’s also a symbol to honor veterans and raise awareness for the work of veteran organizations.

The Veterans Supply Drive will go to are events to collect supplies, including a March 29th Utica Comets game

"Not only is there a need for these items, food and clothing and the rehabilitative services, but there is also a need to raise awareness that these organizations exist and that veterans do have an outlet and they do have a resource here with these types of programs," says Calabrese.

The truck will be used at community events, parades and veterans programs throughout the year.

Calabrese says the plan is for the truck and the supply initiative to be a permanent fixture in the community.

"This is going to be a long-term initiative. This year we have 30 events. We are going to grow this and expand it. We have corporate partners like First Source Federal Credit Union, CABVI, Utica Comets, and Sitrin Healthcare. We have very well-established organizations that will help us continue this well into the future," says Calabrese.

The truck will make its debut March 29 at a Utica Comets hockey game.

The Comets are asking fans to bring cans and non-perishable foods for the Feed Our Vets organization in Utica.
