Jim Boeheim is one of three coaches who will be honored in May by ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale, during an annual fundraising event for pediatric cancer research.
The 10th Annual Dick Vitale Gala will include Boeheim as well as Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith and Florida State's football coach, Jimbo Fisher. The event awards successful coaches who have also shown a commitment to fighting cancer.
Boeheim has raised several millions of dollars for cancer research through his participation in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic and through his charity, the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation.
The foundation's stated mission is "to enrich the lives of kids in need within our Central New York community, as well, as, provide support for eliminating cancer through research and advocacy."
Over the past decade, the Dick Vitale Gala has raised about $12 million, including $2.1 million alone during last year's event, according to its website.
"We need money for pediatric research to help youngsters battling cancer," said Vitale. "There is nothing more tragic than watching a mom and dad put a child to rest. Until my last breath, I'll help young people facing this challenge."
The event is on May 15 at the Ritz-Carleton in Sarasota, Fla.
