National Adoption Day Officially 'Rings in' Families at the OnCenter

John Smith, WAER News

A large U.S. flag served as the backdrop behind Family Court Judges from Central New York at the OnCenter this morning who were about to officially finalize the adoption process for families.  A local politician candidly shared his emotional account about the day he and his wife decided to adopt two children to expand their family…  Congressman John Katko.

“You see, Robin and I wanted to do something and we wanted to give back… and we wanted to help somebody that’s less fortunate than ourselves. And so, we engaged in a foster parent program. And going through that program is tough. They tell you a lot of things and it’s a difficult program but, it’s a great program.”

Katko thanked parents before they officially adopted their sons and daughters today and encouraged people who are considering it to take the next step. Family Court Judges rang bells to complete the adoptions. Family Court Judges from around Central New York came to Syracuse for the special day. The Honorable Randal Caldwell from Oneida County says it’s a long process for families to reach this point.

John and Robin Katko shared with parents they also adopted two kids years ago.

“As judges, we see a lot of the situations that are really terrible. You know, abuse and neglect type of cases. Of course, they can come into the system through other avenues. We look to return some of these children to the parent, that’s what’s required by law but, fostering children is really rewarding when we speak to the foster parents.”

Oneida Family Court Judge Randal Caldwell volunteered his services for National Adoption Day at the OnCenter.

An adoptive parent from the North Country, Nicole Lyndaker already had three kids.

“I don’t think even originally our goal was even adoption. Our goal was more like helping parents take care of their kids. That’s what our goal was, I think. And then it just changed when we met those four children.”

Lyndaker’s new daughter Maliya was very excited.

“It’s gonna change my whole life. I’m gonna be with a loved family.”
