National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Warning for Syracuse and Onondaga County

National Weather Service Binghamton

Central New Yorkers who have their shovels and snowblowers on standby know that green lawns don’t last forever in December.  The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Winter Storm Warning Tuesday morning at 10 AM through Thursday Morning at 7 AM including Syracuse and Onondaga County.  Warning Coordination Meteorologist Dave Nicosia says the developing coastal storm will be centered off the New Jersey Coast.

“This is the type of track that brings Central New York one of its biggest snowstorms… besides the Lake Effect. Outside (of) the Lake Effect areas, this is when a large part of Central New York gets hit.”

Nicosia adds the coastal storm will stall a couple of days and that’s why the Winter Storm Warning is through Thursday.  He feels that travel tomorrow morning will be fine, but Tuesday afternoon is when things will significantly change after a wintry mix changes over to Snow.  Earlier today his models suggested the storm will get bad between two to three PM.

“So, this could be a pretty big storm for the area. Travel could be severely hampered or become very dangerous by tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon especially tomorrow night.”

Nicosia is keeping an eye on the latest weather models and the timeline of the storm’s arrival tomorrow could change, but he’s quite certain the afternoon will get bad.  Pointing to the recent Western New York Storm last month which stranded travelers and claimed lives, he urges people not to drive once the storm arrives unless it’s an emergency.  To view National Weather Service forecasts and updates click here and listen to WAER.
