Syracuse's offense will have a new quarterback this week, after Terrel Hunt fractured his fibula against Louisville.
When Syracuse hosts No. 1 Florida State on Saturday, the offense will have a new coordinator, as well.
Quarterbacks coach Tim Lester will take over the role of offensive coordinator and call plays when the Orange and Seminoles face off at noon in the Carrier Dome. Offense coordinator/associate head coach George McDonald was stripped of his title and play calling duties, the team announced Monday. He has been demoted to wide receivers coach.
“I’ve had to make a tough decision that has been less difficult to make because of the unselfishness of our teammate and coach George McDonald," Scott Shafer said. "Let me start by saying I’ve never worked with a harder working and more devoted individual than George McDonald. I truly appreciate his devotion to the team."
Lester is in his second year at Syracuse after coming to the team when Shafer became head coach. He previously served as head coach/offensive coordinator at Elmhurst College from 2008-2012. Now, he takes over for an offense that's scored one touchdown in the last two games, has played poorly in the red zone and has become penalty prone.
“I’ve made the decision to change roles to use our staff’s talents together more effectively," Shafer said. "Coach Tim Lester will call the plays and coordinate the offense moving forward. He, George and the offensive staff will continue to work alongside one another striving to improve our offense together."
Against Louisville, the Orange only managed to score two field goals, while allowing two safeties. Syracuse now ranks 107th in the nation with 21.6 points per game.
Said Shafer, “We are committed and unified to take the actions necessary to maximize the talent and drive of this football team.”
