The Syracuse Orange (5-3) will head to Geneva, New York to face the Hobart Statesman (5-4), Wednesday at 7 PM for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. The Orange will look for a bounce back victory after a 17-7 loss against Notre Dame.

Cooling Off

After storming out of the gate to a 5-0 start the Orange have dropped its last three, falling to 5-3 overall, and 1-2 in the ACC. However, they can take solace in knowing that those losses came against three top 10 opponents, including #2 ranked Notre Dame. The Orange have a chance to right the ship against a Hobart team that is coming off a 13-5 loss against Saint Joseph’s.

Renewing a Longtime Rivalry

This will be the 102nd time that Syracuse and Hobart will play one another, making it the third longest rivalry in college lacrosse. In 1986, the Kraus-Simmons Trophy was created in honor of former Orange head coach Roy Simmons Sr. and former Hobart coach, Babe Kraus. Syracuse has won the trophy 27 times while Hobart has held the trophy only 3 times. The Orange have dominated the matchup overall, with a record of 73-26-2 and will look to win for the third straight year in a row.

Orange Elite

Dylan Donahue joined an elite class last Saturday against Notre Dame, becoming just the 17th player to record 200 points in the history of the program. The 200th point came in the second quarter off a Sergio Salcido assist. He is now just five goals away from breaking into Syracuse’s top-10 goal scorers list.

Key Matchups-Salcido’s Improved Play vs Frank Brown’s scoring output

The tough Syracuse defense will have to find a way to stop Frank Brown, who leads Hobart with 20 goals through their first 9 games. Their offense runs through Brown, but if the Orange can contain him, then the Statesman will have a tough time scoring, as he accounts for nearly a quarter of their goals this season. For the Orange, they will hope that Sergio Salcido can continue to grow and play at the high level he has been all season. Before a quiet game against Notre Dame, Salcido recorded 5 points in the overtime game against Duke. When Salcido first joined the team, coach Desko didn’t foresee that he would become a starter on the team. But, he has shown perseverance and grit to earn a starting role for the Orange.

“Honestly, I just stayed the course, kept working hard, had faith in the system, and continue to just grind every day and try to get better at something every day,” Salcido said about earning his starting role. “Now I think it’s just starting to pay off a little bit.”
