Syracuse Lacrosse Looks to Keep it Rolling Against Army

The Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse team (2-0) will host the Army Black Knights (2-1) at the Carrier Dome on Sunday at 4 PM. The Orange is coming off a 16-7 win against the Albany Great Danes. The Orange will look to continue its hot start and improve its record to 3-0.

Injury Report

The Orange will be without Nick Piroli for the second straight game, as the attackman is still dealing with a lower-body injury. The man who replaced him in the lineup was Tim Barber, who left last game early with an undisclosed injury. It is unknown whether Barber will be available against the Black Knights.

“Nick is out momentarily, I’m not sure when he’s going to come back, but we expect him back this season, but that’s going to be a week to week situation," SU  coach John Desko said after the win against Albany. "To me we’ll see after we talk to the doctors tonight. I’m sure it’s a matter of when we’re getting him back."

Who’s Hot- Dylan Donahue

The redshirt senior has been on fire through the Orange’s first two games; Donahue has 5 goals and 9 assists for a total of 14 points. He also scooped up three groundballs in the game against Albany. Donahue is the unquestioned leader of the team, and you can expect him to fill the score sheet almost every game.

A.J. Barretto coming up big for Army

Freshman goalkeeper A.J. Barretto has been fantastic for Army thus far this season. Barretto’s .571 save-percentage ranks 10th among goalies who have played 100 minutes or more this season. In order for the Black Knights to keep this game close, they will need Barretto to play even better than he has.

Key Matchup-Army’s man-down vs. Syracuse’s man-up

Both teams specialty units are some of the best in the country; Army’s man-down unit has been killing off penalties at a 88% clip—tied for 10th best in the country—while the Orange’s man-up attack ranks third in the country, converting 83% of its chances. If Army wants to keep the game close, they will have to first stay disciplined and not take any penalties and, if they do take some, be able to slow the Orange’s potent man advantage.
