Top-Ranked Syracuse Takes On Cornell

Cuse.com

Looking to match its best start since 1990, Syracuse (8-1, 3-0) faces Cornell (3-6, 2-2) on Tuesday night from the Carrier Dome.

The 102nd edition of this in-state rivalry finds a Syracuse team looking to avenge an overtime loss against Cornell a year ago. Now senior Nick Mariano scored four goals in the Orange's 10-9 defeat.

Syracuse is on a six-game winning steak that has propelled themselves to the top of the NCAA polls following former number one Penn State's loss against Maryland over the weekend.

SU vs. Cornell @ 7pm. Countdown to Faceoff starts at 6:30.

The Orange is almost a week removed from a comfortable win over Hobart a week ago. Sophomore Nate Solomon and Mariano continued to lead the way for 'Cuse with four goals apiece. Their efforts have now combined for 41 goals scored on the season. Mariano didn't finish there either, adding three assists to his total.

Senior midfielder Sergio Salcido continued his hot streak setting up his teammates as well. He totaled five assists against Hobart, moving up to fifth in the nation for assists per game.

Cornell enters the matchup on a two-game win streak, having knocked off conference foes Dartmouth and Harvard. Big Red is led by freshman Jeff Teat, who has 40 points to his name this season. The young attacker registered three goals and two assists against Harvard.

Teat has bolstered the attack, but it is Cornell's defense that has struggled this season. It ranks in the bottom ten for scoring defense allowing more than 13 goals per game.

Big Red won't find it easy to generate turnovers against Syracuse either. The Orange rank third in the country in terms of turnovers committed per game. Ball control and consistent pressure are what Syracuse's offense is predicated on, which could lead to several problems for a rather porous Cornell defense.
