WAER Awarded Best Newscast, Human Interest, Sports Show, News Feature, 5 others by Syr Press Club

WAER was honored a total of 9 times at the Syracuse Press Club for work aired and published in 2013.  The event took place at Drumlins Saturday Night, covering radio, television, print, online, photography and graphics work.

WAER's Scott Willis won top honors for Best Radio Newscast, with reporting by Chris Bolt in the award winning cast.  Gabe Altieri and Evan Weston took the first prize in Best Sports Show for the pre-game broadcast Countdown to Kickoff for the SU Texas Bowl.  In the same category, Matt Appel, Jarret Leist and Marc Webber won second for the Sportnight show, Rise of the ACC.

First Place honors were also taken home by John Smith for Best Human Interest Feature for his story on the Everson Museum's exhibit of video games.  Chris Bolt took the second place award for a story on Garland Jeffries' return and concert in Syracuse.  Chris's story on a local Prosthetics Company was chosen Best News Feature story.

Other award were won for Best Sports Story by Gabe Altieri, Second place for Public Affairs Reporting by freelance reporter Allie Wenner, and a Second for Multi-Media Reporting by Chris Bolt for the online series Cycling the Erie Canal.  

Entries were submitted by stations and media organizations in the Syracuse area, as well as those from Binghamton to Watertown, Auburn to Utica.  

Chris Bolt, Ed.D. has proudly been covering the Central New York community and mentoring students for more than 30 years. His career in public media started as a student volunteer, then as a reporter/producer. He has been the news director for WAER since 1995. Dedicated to keeping local news coverage alive, Chris also has a passion for education, having trained, mentored and provided a platform for growth to more than a thousand students. Career highlights include having work appear on NPR, CBS, ABC and other news networks, winning numerous local and state journalism awards.
