WAER News & Sports receive 6 awards from Syracuse Press Club

  The WAER pregame show "Countdown to Kickoff: SU vs LSU football" was awarded Best Sports Show at Saturday night's Syracuse Press Club awards banquet.  "Let's Talk Climate: Bringing the Paris Climate Change Talks Home to CNY"was selected as second place for Best Special Radio Program.  Meanwhile a report by John Smith, "Teachers Send Governor Cuomo a Message at the State Fair" was selected second place for Best Spot News, while Scott Willis' "Lake Cleanup Also Means Habitat Restoration" won second place for Best News Feature.

Those were among six winners at the annual awards event that recognizes the best broadcast, print and digital journalism in a multi-county area.

The Countdown to Kickoff program was produced by Sam Hyman, Jonny Wincott and J.P. Chunga.  Also in Sports, Andrew Scaglione was honored for second place Best Radio Sport Story for "End of Archbold Stadium."

The final winner for WAER for the evening was Chris Bolt's "Tubman Was Here: New York School Children Creating Art while Learning History" which was selected second place "Best Human Interest Feature".

Chris Bolt, Ed.D. has proudly been covering the Central New York community and mentoring students for more than 30 years. His career in public media started as a student volunteer, then as a reporter/producer. He has been the news director for WAER since 1995. Dedicated to keeping local news coverage alive, Chris also has a passion for education, having trained, mentored and provided a platform for growth to more than a thousand students. Career highlights include having work appear on NPR, CBS, ABC and other news networks, winning numerous local and state journalism awards.
