Winners of 10th Annual Rosamond Gifford Zoo Photo Contest Announced

A number of people remembered to bring their camera to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. And now, some of those photos will appear on a billboard.

The winners of this year’s Winter at the Zoo Photo Contest were announced today.  The grand prize winner, which went to a photo of a giant hawk fish, looked a little like a Rockstar, said Jaime Alvarez, the zoo’s public relations director.

“He’s yellow and white stripped and he has these great lips.  We were sort of joking about [how] he sort of looks like a Mick Jagger or a Steven Tyler,” she said.

The zoo received more than 400 entries this year and narrowed it down to 18 winning photographs. Those photos will be displayed at the zoo.  They’ll also be part of a traveling art exhibit. Even those that didn’t win still have the chance to be featured in a brochure or on the zoo’s Facebook page.

Snowy weather won't keep these Eurasian lynxes inside.

The animals can either stay inside or venture into the cold.  Most of the outdoor animals prefer to get some fresh air.  For instance, sub-freezing temperatures can’t keep animals like the Eurasian lynx from playing in the snow.

“It’s what they’re accustomed to, so they’re really active,” Alvarez said. “And it’s a really fun time to come and see them.”
