Despite a 5-0 lead early on, the 2013 season ended in disappointment for the Syracuse Orange. Duke defeated SU in the National Championship game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia 16-10. It is the 2nd National Championship in program history for the Blue Devils.
The loss was SU's first in a national championship game since 2001, ending a string of four straight national-title game victories for the Orange.
Top-seeded Syracuse Lacrosse beat Yale 7-6 in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals to advance to the Final Four in Philadelphia. The Orange plays 4-seed Denver Saturday at 5 PM for the right to play in the Championship game on Memorial Day. The Orange jumped out to a 4-goal lead in the 1st quarter with help by junior attack Derek Maltz, who had 2 goals. But then the 'Cuse was held scoreless for a stretch of over 43 minutes and allowed Yale to take a 6-4 lead in the 4th quarter. Syracuse was resilient, however, and chopped away at the lead.
SU Lacrosse got past Bryant, 12-7, in the NCAA Opening Round Sunday night inside the Carrier Dome. Dylan Donahue led the Orange with 3 goals, while Kevin Rice added 2 goals to go along with 2 assists. Tewaaraton finalist JoJo Marasco paced the midfield with a pair of goals as well.
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team takes on Northeast Conference champion Bryant in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in the Carrier Dome. WAER's coverage starts at 7 PM with Countdown to Face-off. The game follows at 7:30. After winning the Big East Tournament Championship last weekend for the second straight season, the Orange was rewarded for with the top seed in this year's 16-team field.
In a unique twist, No. 5 Syracuse (11-3) finds itself squaring off against No. 6 Notre Dame (10-3) for the second time in six days when the 2013 BIG EAST Championship commences on Thursday, May 2. The Orange and Irish meet at 4:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
