Two St. Lawrence County Residents Face Child Exploitation Charges Connected to Alleged Kidnapping

The two Saint Lawrence County residents already charged with kidnapping two Amish girls now face child sexual exploitation and child pornography charges.  Stephen Howells, 39, and Nicole Vaisey, 25, of Hermon were indicted today in Syracuse. 

Richard Hartunian, the US Attorney for the Northern District of New York, says Howells and Vaisey could each receive between 15 and 30 years in prison if convicted of any of the four charges they both face in the indictment. Howells could also receive up to 20 years in prison if he is found guilty of producing child pornography.

Elder Abuse Awareness

A group of people in Onondaga County who work with older adults want to make sure they know how to protect themselves from scams and elder abuse.

Wednesday was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and Vera House estimates that 6,000 incidents in the County went unreported in 2013.

Vera House Presents 24th Annual Report to Community

Vera House released its 24th Annual Report to the Community on Wednesday, providing a snapshot of Domestic and Sexual Violence.  The statistics are disturbing. 

In 2012, The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and Syracuse Police Department answered more than 18,300 domestic violence calls combined, leading to more than 2,500 perpetrator arrests.
