The police chief in DeWitt says numerous entities are ready to jump in to action if there’s a report of someone who might become a threat at a school or in the community at large.  Meanwhile, the debate continues in Florida over what people knew about the shooter and what could have been done to stop him. 


  A recent string of home burglaries continues to worry residents in the town of Dewitt.  Local police are trying to stop this unusual crime spree.

The three break-ins in the Town of DeWitt this week alone are indicative of a trend that has been increasing since early this summer. Dewitt Police Lieutenant John Anton says the houses have been broken into at times of the day people are not typically home. He says it is possible one group could be behind the burglaries… and many of them seem to follow a pattern.

John Balloni confirmed Monday what many already suspected…that he’s running for Onondaga County Sheriff.  He’s been raising money for months, and retiring Sheriff Kevin Walsh has publicly supported Balloni as his successor.   He told a crowd of about 50 supporters yesterday that in an age of tight budgets and sparse manpower, he wants more partnerships with local police agencies to boost community policing.  But he stopped short of a full endorsement of consolidation.

DeWitt Police Chief Gene Conway made it official Thursday and declared his candidacy for Onondaga County Sheriff.  About 60 supporters packed into Tony's Restaurant on Burnet Ave. for the announcement. 

His law enforcement career spans 37 years, the last 12 in DeWitt.  Conway is a Republican who started in North Syracuse, followed by 24 years in various roles in the sheriff’s department.
