All Onondaga County Kids Under 5 Now Eligible for Free Book Program

  Wearing their red and white-striped Dr. Seuss hats, one dozen children sat in a circle and listened to a reading of Dr. Seuss’ “Are You My Mother?” today.  They sat on the front steps of a replica City Hall inside WCNY’s Education Center in observance of “Read Across America Day.”

"I must get something for my baby bird to eat, she said. I'll be back," County Executive Joanie Mahoney read to the group of children.  

Onondaga Citizens League Report Warns of Underinvestment in Young Children

The Onondaga Citizens League released a report calling attention to a serious lack of investment in the community’s youngest children. The report, entitled “Thrive by Five,” acknowledges the fact that New York State is making provisions to improve kindergarten and Pre-K but warns that officials have failed to place enough emphasis on the earliest developmental stages.

A community group is rallying diverse support for the expansion of Pre-K in Syracuse, with supporters saying it could improve the economy and diminish crime.
