Central New Yorkers who are on Medicare need to make any changes in their plans by the end of open enrollment, December 7th.  Officials with UnitedHealthCare Medical and Retirement in Syracuse want to make sure people aren't confused about enrolling through the Health Care Exchanges that are part of the Affordable Care Act.

Health Care Act Enrollment Begins for Central New Yorkers

Central New Yorkers will be among 2.4 million residents statewide who can start enrolling for some form of financial help as parts of the Affordable Healthcare Act kick in. Beginning October 1, 2013 individuals are able to enroll and secure financial benefits, which begin at the start of 2014.

Upstate Unveils Emergency Department for Seniors

The future of medical care for senior citizens in Central New York took a big step in the right direction  today as staff and patients  gathered to officially open the area’s first geriatric emergency department at Upstate’s Community Campus.  Emergency Medicine Director Jamie Ciaccio will help lead the new eight bed  unit called Gem Care that will offer geriatric-specific equipment and emergency care to those 65 and older.  With state of the art technology, Ciaccio says Gem Care’s staff members will work as a team to encourage quick and efficient discharges.
