Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney used the occasion of her 10th state of the county address Tuesday evening to calm some of what she called the “fearmongering” over the Consensus Commission’s recommendations to modernize local government. 

"There is not a single thing written in the Consensus report that will spell disaster for anyone."

Such has been the rhetoric from the mayor to the county legislature over the main recommendation to combine Syracuse and Onondaga County.

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says the swift opposition from some officials about the recommendation of a metropolitan government amounts to nothing more than scare tactics and fear mongering.  We caught up with Mahoney to round out our series on the potential impact of the Consensus Commission’s final report.

Mahoney says she’s always been a proponent of more efficient government, and has continued the county’s track record of combining city and county departments.

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney delivered perhaps her most passionate state of the county address to date last night, outlining her administration’s accomplishments while also addressing the community’s significant challenges.  Perhaps the biggest surprise came when she announced Syracuse’s Say Yes college tuition fund would be permanently endowed.

  Onondaga County voters will head to the polls Tuesday to choose their next county executive.  Toby Shelley says he wants to give voters a choice, and thinks there are many who are frustrated with Joanie Mahoney.  He describes himself as a moderate democrat who’s fiscally conservative…creating a unique political dynamic…

As Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney finishes up her post at the New York Power Authority, she also begins a new appointment by Governor Andrew Cuomo.  Mahoney is the new Chair of the Thruway’s Board and she says the first task is dealing with a $25 million dollar operating deficit.

Central New Yorkers who visit the state fairgrounds for any number events year-round or just the 12-day fair probably have ideas of how $50 million  in state money might be used to re-imagine the venue.    Many have probably seen or at least heard of the plan presented by County Executive Joanie Mahoney at her state of the county address to make the fairgrounds a more modern, vibrant, year-round attraction.  Acting fair director Troy Waffner says it’s still just conceptual.

Spending will decrease, taxes rates will fall, and water and sewer rates will go up if Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney’s budget goes through as is.  She delivered her $1.24 billion spending plan Monday to lawmakers.    Mahoney says the property tax levy will drop by 1.2 percent, to a historic low.

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney unveiled preliminary plans Wendesday for a $100 million revitalization of the west shore of Onondaga Lake.  It was the first and possibly only public meeting on the massive project, which was first announced in late January with a visit from Gov. Andrew Cuomo. 

A number of experts will be coming to the Syracuse area over the next few months to share their experiences with transportation projects on a scale similar to what’s ahead for Interstate 81.  The series is being organized and co-sponsored by the city, county, and state. County Executive Joanie Mahoney expects the experts will be a wealth of information.  Mahoney says the speakers are intended to complement the displays and materials at the Carnegie library on Columbus Circle where people can stop in at their leisure to learn more about the options and process.
