A fourth candidate has entered the race for two Councilor-at-Large Seats on the Syracuse Common Council, that will be contested this November.  Progressive politics that oppose a conservative Congress and President might play a role in the local election.  The Green Party locally has run numerous candidates for a range of positions in City Hall, including this year's candidacy for Mayor by Howie Hawkins.  None has broken through to get elected yet.

Monday's Syracuse Common Council meeting will include a new member…but he’s no stranger to the council or city hall.  Veteran politician Joe Nicoletti returns as a city lawmaker for the first time in nearly 25 years.  Hiss storied political career began in the 1970’s when he won his first election.

  A coalition of Syracuse-area community organizations has launched a push for a city ordinance aimed at giving unemployed residents a share of the jobs on large projects contracted by the city.  The resident employment ordinance is being spearheaded by the Urban Jobs Task Force and District Councilor Khalid Bey.  It would set a 20% hiring goal, with half of that reserved impoverished neighborhoods.

  Jubliee Homes Executive Director Walt Dixie knows a lot still has to happen in the next three to four weeks before the community can celebrate any groundbreaking of a Price Rite supermarket at the corner of South and Bellevue Avenues.

  About 150 families in Syracuse could find out in the next few weeks if they’ll have to pony up as much as $1200-a-year for flood insurance…even though the city doesn’t think they’re in any danger of a flood.
