  Nearly 6,200 Central New York college students who rely on a long-running federal student loan program find themselves in limbo after congress failed to renew the program.  The Perkins Loan program provides low-interest loans to students who can’t borrow or afford more expensive private student loans.  Senator Chuck Schumer stopped at LeMoyne College Wednesday, one of 122 institutions across New York that count on the loans to help make college more affordable.

  Many Central New Yorkers are following Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S., which kicks off late Wednesday when he arrives in the nation’s capital.  David McCallum is Special Assistant to the President for Mission Integration at LeMoyne College, a Jesuit school.  He says the Pope’s Jesuit roots give the Pontiff a fearlessness to champion social issues.

Data collected by a team of local researchers concludes an experiment of sorts launched about five years ago by the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County seems to be working…and very well.  In 2010, the coalition and its many community partners started enrolling select Syracuse children in a program that sent books to their homes in hopes of starting good reading habits with parents. 

   It’s called Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.  Dr.  Jeff Craig is Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support at OCM BOCES.

LeMoyne College in Syracuse made history Thursday with the selection of its 14th President.  Current Provost, Doctor Linda LeMura will become the first ever lay woman President at a Jesuit College on July 1, 2014.  LeMura expressed her gratitude Friday,  and became emotional sharing her family’s search for the American Dream which she says inspired her.
