About 1,000 Onondaga County Families are getting access to more resources to help children with language and reading through in-home visits.  The national “Talking is Teaching: Talk Read Sing” campaign designed to encourage parents to engage in language-rich activities with their children at an early age.

Data collected by a team of local researchers concludes an experiment of sorts launched about five years ago by the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County seems to be working…and very well.  In 2010, the coalition and its many community partners started enrolling select Syracuse children in a program that sent books to their homes in hopes of starting good reading habits with parents. 

   It’s called Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.  Dr.  Jeff Craig is Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support at OCM BOCES.

Education experts with ProLiteracy in Syracuse say the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) adult aptitude report should serve as a wake-up call for the United States education system.
