Symphonic music fans in Central New York will see a new Managing Director at the helm of Symphoria in about a month.

The organization hired Catherine Underhill, who’s been Executive Director of the Colorado Music Festival and Center for Musical Arts for the past 11 years.  Underhill, who has 30 years of arts organization management after a Harvard degree in public administration, starts September 1, 2013.

Underhill says she hopes to ensure symphonic music stays vibrant in the Syracuse area:

Catching your favorite acts in concert this summer is proving to be an expensive endeavor.

What was the most recent CD (album) you listened to all the way through, and then said to yourself - "hey - I wanna listen to that again, right now" - ?  For me, it's the second CD in vocalist Jacqui Naylor's 2-CD release, "Live East / West" (2005 Ruby Star Records). On the second CD, recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. Jacqui performs some sweet originals, especially her love song to San Francisco, "City By the Bay," plus several intriguing covers.

Despite the rain on Saturday, hardcore jazz fans showed up to Jamesville Beach for some magical moments.  Here's what you missed if you stayed away.

One way I rate music is - after I hear a song (or songs), do I wanna hear that song again. A few days ago, I checked Aaron Neville's recent CD, "My True Story", out of the Petit Library, and I'm on my 7th listen to the whole CD...  actually, I've lost count of how many times I've listened.  And on most all the songs, I'm singin' along... ha ha ha ... This disc, co-produced by Keith Richards and Don Was, features Neville and an excellent group of back-up singers lovingly interpreting 13 of Neville's favorite oldies and doowop songs.

Blues and soul balladeer Bobby 'Blue' Bland died on Sunday in Memphis.

Forty eight hours after it’d appeared that Soundgarden in Armory Square could close its doors, a compromise was reached that would exempt certain items from the city’s secondhand dealer ordinance.  The store had been trying for months to get CDs, DVDs and other media exempt from some provisions of the ordinance because they said it would be too burdensome to log the thousands of items they take in each month.

Retro-R&B singer Sharon Jones (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings) is taking a break from touring to focus on treatment and recovery.

A new schedule has been released for the 31st Annual M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest and it features one of the more critically acclaimed voices in jazz today.  Thanks to a recent grant from the Central New York Community Foundation, chart-topping jazz singer Giacomo Gates is headed to Syracuse.  Syracuse Jazz Fest Executive Director Frank Malfitano describes Giacomo Gates as a "vocalese hipster in the style of Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson."  Gates performs Friday, July 5th at 5:00 PM.

Notable jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller passes in Allentown, PA at 57.
