The original construction of Interstate 81 through Syracuse changed the city and region forever. Now there are plans to tear down the highway and there are some who see the replacement process as a chance to help Syracuse’s poverty problem.  The highway and poverty are linked in surprising ways, WAER's Kijin Higashibaba reports in Part 2 of their examination of I-81 and poverty.

A year-long study examining Central New York’s workforce finds there are plenty of jobs and plenty of people looking for work, but significant barriers to accessing those jobs.  The report “How CNY Works” was presented Tuesday by the Onondaga Citizens League at its annual meeting.

  The Onondaga Citizens League has embarked on its latest community study to put real faces on the area’s "economic ecosystem"…who gets work, who doesn’t, and who makes those decisions.  WAER News stopped by the first of three “scoping” sessions to learn more.

Understanding the diversity of the Central New York economy is probably a good place to start.  That's what this group tried to tackle.

Onondaga Citizens League Report Warns of Underinvestment in Young Children

The Onondaga Citizens League released a report calling attention to a serious lack of investment in the community’s youngest children. The report, entitled “Thrive by Five,” acknowledges the fact that New York State is making provisions to improve kindergarten and Pre-K but warns that officials have failed to place enough emphasis on the earliest developmental stages.

The process to help refugees resettle in the Syracuse area could be a little easier on the people and families that have come from places such as Sudan, Bosnia, and other troubled countries.
