Maui, HI - The Syracuse Orange (7-0) defeated the Baylor Bears (6-1) 74-67 in the championship game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center Wednesday night. Senior C.J. Fair was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. In the title game versus #18 Baylor, Fair had 24 points and three steals.
Maui, HI -Syracuse (6-0) remains undefeated all-time in the Maui Invitational (8-0) with a 92-81 win over California (5-1) on Tuesday afternoon at the Lahaina Civic Center. The #8 Orange moves on to the Championship game of the Tournament where it will take on 6-0 #18 Baylor. The Bears have knocked off host school Chaminade and came from behind to beat Dayton on Tuesday to advance to the finals.
Syracuse basketball (4-0) is in Maui, Hawaii this week for the EA Sports Maui Invitational. This is the third time the Orange has been in the event. It won in 1990 and 1998, as well.
The eight teams in the Maui Invitational are a combined 30-and-0 coming into the week's slate of games. All teams are guaranteed three games Monday through Wednesday. This year's field includes three ranked teams in Syracuse, Gonzaga, and Baylor. The other participants include California, Arkansas, Minnesota, Dayton, and Division II school and host, Chaminade.
Syracuse basketball (1-0) takes on the Fordham Rams (1-0) Tuesday night inside the Carrier Dome in its 2nd regular season contest. The Orange comes off an 82-60 win over Cornell in its season opener. Eighth-ranked SU was led by Trevor Cooney, who netted a career-high 27 points.
After his career game, Cooney admitted that it was easier to play knowing that he was staying in the game even if he missed one or two shots.
