Every basketball season has it's fair share of surprises. For the SU Men's Basketball team one of those pleasant surprises came in the from of Freshman Marek Dolezaj. This week on The Best of WAER Sports Podcast Zach Parnes shares with us the journey of the forward from Bratislava. 

Also this week, with just a few games left the tournament fate of SU Men's Basketball is still undecided.  WAER's Maura Sheridan looks at the road ahead  and what the team can do to extend their season.

Syracuse Earns Important Road Win Against Miami

The Syracuse Orange (18-9, 7-7) defeated the Miami Hurricanes (18-8, 7-7) 62-55 Saturday afternoon in south Florida after suffering a tough loss to NC State in their previous game.

Much of the first half was controlled by the Orange, led by Tyus Battle, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds after the first 20 minutes. Miami would come storming back to close the half, however, going on a 7-0 run with 2:06 to play, and giving them their first lead since the opening minutes. The game went into halftime tied at 25.

Hundreds of Fans Celebrate SU Women and Men Basketball Teams

Hundreds of orange-clad fans enthusiastically sent off the Syracuse University's men's and women's basketball teams before they depart, respectively, to Houston and Indianapolis to compete in NCAA's Final Four.

The students, families, and lifelong orange supporters gathered with Coach Boeheim and Coach Hillsman for the celebration at Manley Arena at noon.

"We’re not happy right now where we are. We are proud of what we have done, but we are looking forward to two more games and coming back here again one more time to celebrate," Coach Boeheim said.

  Syracuse Basketball renews its rivalry against former Big East foe Georgetown tomorrow in its first matchup since SU’s move to the ACC. But for the 1st time since 1974, fans will not see the iconic, scowling figure of Coach Jim Boeheim on the sideline against their biggest rival.

Syracuse University has selected Mark Coyle as its next athletic director.  Coyle comes from Boise State in Idaho.  There he led a department that fielded 20 athletic teams.  He's credited with academic and athletic success.

Syracuse University has self-imposed a one-year, postseason ban for the men's basketball 2014-15 season, according to a press release from Chancellor Kent Syverud on Wednesday evening.

The ban is part of an ongoing investigation between the university and the NCAA's Committee on Infractions.  It includes the ACC Tournament, the NCAA Tournament or the NIT.  The university said it told the NCAA about the ban before making the announcement to the public.

Orange Hoops Wins 3rd Maui Title

Maui, HI - The Syracuse Orange (7-0) defeated the Baylor Bears (6-1) 74-67 in the championship game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center Wednesday night. Senior C.J. Fair was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. In the title game versus #18 Baylor, Fair had 24 points and three steals.

Maui, HI -  Syracuse (6-0) remains undefeated all-time in the Maui Invitational (8-0) with a 92-81 win over California (5-1) on Tuesday afternoon at the Lahaina Civic Center. The #8 Orange moves on to the Championship game of the Tournament where it will take on 6-0 #18 Baylor. The Bears have knocked off host school Chaminade and came from behind to beat Dayton on Tuesday to advance to the finals.

Cuse Hoops Readies For Maui Invitational

Syracuse basketball (4-0) is in Maui, Hawaii this week for the EA Sports Maui Invitational. This is the third time the Orange has been in the event. It won in 1990 and 1998, as well.

The eight teams in the Maui Invitational are a combined 30-and-0 coming into the week's slate of games. All teams are guaranteed three games Monday through Wednesday. This year's field includes three ranked teams in Syracuse, Gonzaga, and Baylor. The other participants include California, Arkansas, Minnesota, Dayton, and Division II school and host, Chaminade.

'Cuse Hoops Gears Up For Fordham

Syracuse basketball (1-0) takes on the Fordham Rams (1-0) Tuesday night inside the Carrier Dome in its 2nd regular season contest. The Orange comes off an 82-60 win over Cornell in its season opener. Eighth-ranked SU was led by Trevor Cooney, who netted a career-high 27 points.

After his career game, Cooney admitted that it was easier to play knowing that he was staying in the game even if he missed one or two shots.
