Syracuse didn’t need any overtimes or trick plays to beat Central Michigan on Saturday. Just good defense.

Two weeks after narrowly beating Villanova, the Orange (2-0) easily defeated the Chippewas, 40-3, on Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

"I really challenged the defense to play well in stopping the run," Scott Shafer said.  "Coach (Chuck) Bullough, Coach (Tim) Daoust, Coach (Fred) Reed, and Coach (Clark) Lea did a heck of a job of getting those kids ready to play."

Terrel Hunt yearned to get back onto the field to redeem himself, since last time out he got ejected from Syracuse's 27-26 double-overtime win over Villanova.  After having to wait two full weeks, Hunt finally gets his opportunity on Saturday as the Orange (1-0) takes on the Central Michigan Chippewas (2-0) in Mount Pleasant.

“I’m itching a lot to get out there,” Hunt said Wednesday.

The Orange offense struggled to get off the ground, amassing just 75 total rushing yards and 133 passing yards. "Too many penalties today," coach Shafer said, in reference to his team's nine infractions for 91 yards. "We need to mature quickly as a team, but it starts with me."

But even though Head Coach Scott Shafer knows Clemson has the higher rated team, he believes Syracuse has what it takes to pull the upset if the fan base rallies behind the team,.

Syracuse (1-2) throttled Wagner 54-0 in the Dome Opener on Saturday. It’s the first win of the Scott Shafer era, but he wasn’t focused on that.

“I didn’t think about my first win too much until they dumped the Gatorade on me,” Shafer said, with a chuckle. “But it feels great.”

The big story of the day revolved around, what else, the quarterbacks. Senior transfer Drew Allen started the game, but was yanked after he mustered just three points on three drives.
