A Local Veterans Day observance at the War Memorial in Syracuse this morning honored all Veteran’s both past and present.

“The bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there” the choir sang.

The Spirit of Syracuse Choir and the spoken word describing the countless sacrifices of brave men and women of all wars were equally moving. Vietnam Veteran Gordie Lane

The Onondaga County War Memorial hosted its annual Veterans Day Ceremony where County Executive Joanie Mahoney marked the 25th anniversary of the Gulf War in her speech to the crowd.

"Desert shield, Desert Storm and we come together as a community each year on this day to assure all veterans that we are eternally grateful for their service"

Veteran Lynn Sweatland from Liverpool reflected on his service over the years.

Today Onondaga County remembered and honored D-day Veterans and all Armed Service members in the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony at the War Memorial Center in Downtown Syracuse.  70 years ago U-S soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on  D-Day to liberate Europe from Nazi control.

Veterans and their families gathered at the War Memorial Tuesday for a celebration and honoring of their service. Carol Anne Wood is the grandmother of a woman currently serving in the U-S Army.  She would write poems for her granddaughter and the platoon, and quickly became known as the platoon grandmother.

Unfortunately not all service members are able to return to their families and communities. A special table was set up to honor those Missing in Action or who are Prisoners of War.
