Central New York firefighters and state officials gathered in Chittenango Thursday to urge Governor Cuomo to sign a bill that would provide coverage for presumptive cancers contracted by volunteer firefighters. Senator David Valesky says both the Senate and Assembly strongly supported the bill.

Volunteer Fire departments in Onondaga County and across the state will open their doors this weekend in hopes of adding new members to their ranks.  The seventh annual Recruit NY campaign gives residents a chance to talk with firefighters about various volunteer opportunities and to see firefighting demonstrations.  Firemen’s Association of the State of New York President Ken Pienkowski says more volunteers are needed to ensure the protection of New Yorkers without additional cost to taxpayers.

Syracuse Marks 77th Anniversary of Deadly Collins Block Fire

   Vicious winds and heavy rain didn’t stop members of the Syracuse Fire Department Wednesday morning from paying their respects to local firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty. Area firemen, police officers, and onlookers honored those who lost their lives in the Collins Block Fire of 1939.  Nine firefighters perished when the building collapsed. Now, the ceremony honors all firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty in the Department’s history. Fire Chief Paul Linnertz says it’s vital to continue to honor the victims.
