BlueNotes

For years public radio has been home for diverse music in America.  We all have that one song, one band, one moment that transports us to another time or place.  Public radio has always taken creative risks by giving voice to new and emerging artists.  And it has long been the champion of America's cultural heritage - Jazz.

The BlueNotes blog is the place for you to rekindle your passion for music.  Jazz, blues, AAA, folk, world...it's all here at Syracuse Public Media WAER.

Ways To Connect

I had the pleasure of chatting recently with 4 time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Dianne Reeves and we concluded our interview with 10 questions that allow people to learn some new things about this incredible artist.  This edition of Take Ten began when I asked Dianne about the very first record she remembered listening to.  Enjoy!

On this edition of All Songs Considered, hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton share a brand new song from Beck. The new cut, called "Gimme," is the third single he's released since June and by far the strangest (i.e., best) of the bunch. None of the songs will be on the new full-length record Beck hopes to release before the end of the year.

This morning, public radio stations across the country premiered genre-bending rock band TV On The Radio’s new single, "Million Miles."

It’s the group’s second single from a yet-to-be-titled fifth studio album, due for release sometime soon on producer Dave Sitek’s own record label, Federal Prism. It will be TV On The Radio’s first album since parting ways with Interscope Records, which released the group’s prior three albums.

Catherine Underhill Symphoria Managing Director
Symphoria

Symphonic music fans in Central New York will see a new Managing Director at the helm of Symphoria in about a month.

The organization hired Catherine Underhill, who’s been Executive Director of the Colorado Music Festival and Center for Musical Arts for the past 11 years.  Underhill, who has 30 years of arts organization management after a Harvard degree in public administration, starts September 1, 2013.

Underhill says she hopes to ensure symphonic music stays vibrant in the Syracuse area:

Catching your favorite acts in concert this summer is proving to be an expensive endeavor.

What was the most recent CD (album) you listened to all the way through, and then said to yourself - "hey - I wanna listen to that again, right now" - ?  For me, it's the second CD in vocalist Jacqui Naylor's 2-CD release, "Live East / West" (2005 Ruby Star Records). On the second CD, recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. Jacqui performs some sweet originals, especially her love song to San Francisco, "City By the Bay," plus several intriguing covers.

Despite the rain on Saturday, hardcore jazz fans showed up to Jamesville Beach for some magical moments.  Here's what you missed if you stayed away.

One way I rate music is - after I hear a song (or songs), do I wanna hear that song again. A few days ago, I checked Aaron Neville's recent CD, "My True Story", out of the Petit Library, and I'm on my 7th listen to the whole CD...  actually, I've lost count of how many times I've listened.  And on most all the songs, I'm singin' along... ha ha ha ... This disc, co-produced by Keith Richards and Don Was, features Neville and an excellent group of back-up singers lovingly interpreting 13 of Neville's favorite oldies and doowop songs.
