BlueNotes

For years public radio has been home for diverse music in America.  We all have that one song, one band, one moment that transports us to another time or place.  Public radio has always taken creative risks by giving voice to new and emerging artists.  And it has long been the champion of America's cultural heritage - Jazz.

The BlueNotes blog is the place for you to rekindle your passion for music.  Jazz, blues, AAA, folk, world...it's all here at Syracuse Public Media WAER.

Based on a childhood fascination with his grandfather’s player piano, 20-time Grammy Award winner Pat Metheny took his musical exploration to a new territory and built The Orchestrion, a mechanically controlled mini-orchestra capable of responding to his touch on the guitar. This innovative project brought about a completely unique approach to solo performance. The collaboration between this master guitarist and his wildest imagination has resulted in a fascinating and absolutely one of a kind musical experience.

Jazz is one of those music genres that divides listeners into 3 basic categories: enthusiasts, acceptors, and avoiders.  Enthusiasts are those that are passionate about the music and it's history.  Acceptors might not necessarily know what they are listening to but often enjoy and accept what they are hearing.  Avoiders...well they need no definition.  The latest incarnation of the Bill Horrace and Dave Solazzo Experience attempts to bridge some gaps between enthusiast and acceptor and perhaps snag an avoider or two.

When the recorded audio introduction explaining the meaning of Angelic Warrior started, you knew that it was going to be a special performance.  Tia Fuller's grand entrance from the back of the house to the stage set the scene for an evening of high energy jazz improvisation that left the audience wanting more.  Weaving story-telling, audience engagement and energetic performances, Fuller and her band delivered a polished product worthy of closing out a special month dedicated to the preservation of jazz as an American art form.

The Community Folk Art Center in Syracuse has been an established cultural epicenter of Central New York since its founding in 1972. This Friday evening, the CFAC is opening its doors and offering the community a chance to engage with and support its mission. In partnership with Syracuse Public Media WAER, the Folk Art Center is hosting An Evening of Jazz and Wine Tasting to wrap-up a month-long celebration of jazz appreciation. The event will feature the well-known talent of the locally based Latin American band, Grupo Pagan.

In preparing for her upcoming Syracuse performance, saxophonist Tia Fuller spoke with afternoon jazz host and WAER Music Director Eric Cohen.  Eric believes that you can learn a lot about an artist by " asking a series of random questions to get a feel for what they are all about."

Take a listen and see if there are any "ah ha" moments for you.
