1. |
Toots and the Maytals |
"Light Your Light" |
Fantasy |
Toots Hibbert does it again. This one is not like the
star-studded, re-make album of 2 years ago. Some new
songs, some reggae covers of soul classics, a tribute to
Sir Coxsone Dodd; this one rocks and moves. |
|
2. |
Various |
"World Circuit Introducing..." |
World Circuit |
A
selection of 25 years of music from World Circuit, a
double CD of outstanding variety and quality, and an
excellent introduction to World music. This album has
music from all over the globe (except Asia) and there's
not a weak cut on it. |
|
3. |
Rachid Taha |
"The Definitive Collection" and "Diwan 2" |
Wrasse |
Two
albums this year by the North African Rai star. The
Collection is accompanied by a DVD. Diwan 2 is his
second tribute to the North African stars that preceded
him on the Rai stage. |
|
4. |
Various |
"Salsa", "Salsa Dura NYC", "Salsa Clandestina",
"Latin Funk", "Latin Jazz", "Latino Nuevo" |
Rough Guide |
Rough Guide pulled out all the stops this year in
Latin music with six CDs covering various styles and
traditions. |
|
5. |
Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca |
"Isabella" |
Mopiato |
This rocks! Some great covers and the
usual knockout Lemvo originals - smooth, sweet, and
sexy. |
|
6. |
Various |
"World Music, Africa and Mid-East" |
Rough Guide |
The Rough Guide to World Music book is coming out in
three parts, with accompanying CDs for each part.
This is the first. A lot of territory to cover on
one disc, but it's hard to argue with the choices. |
|
7. |
Angelique Kidjo |
"Djin Djin" |
Razor and Tie |
A few prominent guest stars ( Alicia Keyes, Ziggy
Marley, Carlos Santana), some interesting covers
(the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter", Ravel's
"Bolero"), and some really strong new songs by
this musical force of nature from Benin. |
|
8. |
Various |
"World Hits" |
Putumayo |
World music crossover hits from the last 40 years by
Santana, Peter Tosh, Mariam Makeba, etc. A few odd
choices (Lambada?), a few glaring omissions (Desmond
Dekker, Millie Small, Hugh Masakela), a little
short; nevertheless you will recognize most of these
songs and will be happy to have them all on one CD. |
|
9. |
Vieux Farka Toure |
"Vieux Farka Toure" and "UFOs Over Bamako" |
Modiba |
The
previously unheard of son of Ali Farka Toure was this
year's breakout star in African music, and deservedly
so. If you were lucky, you caught at least one of his 3
(!) shows in CNY during 2007. The self-entitled CD is
more electric, more upbeat than his father's recordings,
but strongly rooted in Malian tradition. "UFOs" is an
album of remixes of some of the same songs. |
|
10. |
Various |
"Gypsy Groove" |
Putumayo |
Highly listenable, mostly danceable, very
entertaining music with a gypsy flavor from Germany,
the Netherlands, Hungary, and other places you might
not expect. "In a Bucavina Dance Hall stylee". |
|
11. |
ColumbiAfrica - The Mystic Orchestra |
"Voodoo Love inna Champeta Land" |
Riverboat |
Wonderful synthesis of northern South American music and
West African. The songs are great individually, but the
music works best as an album. |
|
12. |
Bob Marley and the Wailers |
"Roots, Rocks, Remixed" |
Tuff Gong |
Remixes of (mostly) late period Bob Marley songs. |
|
13. |
Andy Palacio and Garifuna |
"Watina" |
Cumbancha |
Last year we got an introduction to Garifuna culture
with the fine album (and performance at Grassroots)
by Aurelio Martinez. This year a really strong album
by Andy Palacio on a more accessible label brings
this unique Central American musical legacy to the
world. |
|
14. |
Fiamma Fumana |
"Onda" |
Mescal |
An overlooked gem. Deeply rootsy and very
contemporary, this Italian outfit has a wonderful
lead singer and strong songwriting. |
|
15. |
Clara Moreno |
"Meu Samba Torto" |
Far Out |
Very
much in the samba tradition, with outstanding support
from guitarist Celso Fonseca. |
|
16. |
Various |
"The Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from
Peru" |
Barbes |
Irresistible. This one squeaked in under the wire, so
you'll be hearing it a lot in the coming weeks. Good
liner notes explain the origins and controversy of the
music. The music, however, speaks for itself. |
|
17. |
Ceu |
"Ceu" |
Six Degrees |
This
year's hot/cool Brazilian item. Rooted in samba, but
surprisingly varied, with a very Six Degrees sound. |
|
18. |
Dobet Gnahore |
"Na Afriki" |
Cumbancha |
Dobet is a great singer and strong songwriter, and her
debut album is powerful and eclectic. She sings in
styles and languages from all over West Africa. |
|
19. |
Federico Aubele |
"Panamerica" |
ESL |
Atmospheric and modern, but still rooted in
Argentinian traditional styles. Lovely. |
|
20. |
Habib Koité and Bamada |
"Afriki" |
Cumbancha |
He's
been around for a long time, but Koite's music still
sounds fresh - very listener-friendly, but not too pop.
Koite's music is less bluesy than many of his Malian
contemporaries, but with equal integrity. |
|
Some recommended music that did not quite make the top
20: |
|
1. |
Bole
2 Harlem |
"Bole 2 Harlem" |
Sounds of the Mushroom |
Actually released in 2006, but we played it a lot
this year. A dynamic blend of hip-hop and Ethiopian
music, it perfectly maintains the balance between a
contemporary sound and the very distinctive
Ethiopian groove. |
|
2. |
Nation Beat |
"Maracatuniversal" |
Modiba |
We originally got this CD on Nation Beats' own
label. Modiba picked them up and remastered and
re-released it. They're big fun live, too. |
|
3. |
Youssou N'Dour |
"Rokku Mi Rokka/Give and Take" |
Nonesuch |
We have not had much time with this very recent
release, but it is another strong album from this
great West African singer/songwriter. |
|
4. |
Grupo Pagan |
"Save the World" |
|
Local Latin flavored rock band. Catch 'em live. |
|
5. |
Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars |
"Living Like a Refugee" |
ANTI- |
Another one we actually got in '06, but most of the
air-play was this year. Having met in a refugee
camp, these musicians found common ground and
musical redemption in a sweet reggae-flavored
groove. |
|
6. |
Tinariwen |
"Aman
Iman /Water is Life" |
World Village |
Some personnel changes from "Ammasakoul", the great
Tinarawen CD from 2 years ago, but still an
exciting take on desert blues. |
